Free travel on NS trains? How an app rips off the Dutch railways

Traveling for free on public transport using OVpay, the new NS smartphone check-in and check-out system? According to RTL, it would be very easy: by creating a temporary debit card in an app, you can travel without balance. For the controller, it appears that the travelers are paying, but in fact, the virtual payment card can be canceled following check-out without a single cent being withdrawn. By exploiting this hole in the network system of the public system, RTL Nieuws has carried out a series of “free” trips with virtual disposable cards in recent weeks.

They are easy to make using a free app, which the portal does not want to mention so as not to advertise the scam and limit itself to the journalistic service. OVpay is the successor to the public transport chip card, with which you can also check in with a bank card or smartphone.

No balance is required to travel with OVpay: travel expenses are charged only followingwards and for this reason, if an ATM card is actually blocked, a virtual one “disappears”.

Transport companies have allocated 100 million euros for OVpay, which also includes bank card check-in, implementing apps, a network system and even physical readers at stations: as RTL says, OVpay is available almost nationwide. Only on trams and RET buses in Rotterdam and on Blauwnet trains in Overijssel is it not yet possible to check in with a (digital) bank card, at least for now.

Translink says in a comment to RTL Nieuws that it is aware of the situation but has no concrete action planned to limit the damage: “Fortunately, the majority of travelers are in good faith”.
