STI screening in practice

In practice, in order to be able to benefit from screening, patients will be required Complete preliminary questionnaire. What are the goals of a laboratory biologist? Understand their sexual behaviors to be able to guide them to the most relevant screening and the most appropriate self-sampling methods.

The first part of the questionnaire dealt with the symptoms experienced by the patients, their vaccination status and that of their partners. Therefore, it can determine which STI screening is necessary. The second part of the questionnaire inquires about the patient’s sexual intercourse (vaginal, urinary, anal, orogenital) in order to be able to determine the type of sample required (urine, vaginal, anal or pharyngeal autologous sample).

If the patient is asymptomatic, screening may be performed in the following situations:

If the patient has had more than one sexual partner in the past 12 months. Or if he wants to stop using condoms with his/her partner. Or if a partner tests positive for one or more sexually transmitted infections.

If these conditions are not met, screening will not be offered unless the patient specifically requests it.

Informing and raising awareness among patients about the importance of sexually transmitted infection prevention

Regarding the results, if one or more sexually transmitted infections are positive, the biologist will notify the patient in person or by phone. They will be reported in a report detailing key information relevant to the care delivered within appropriate structures. This report will also be accompanied by prevention message Regarding pregnancy and the risk of transmitting identified sexually transmitted infections to the patient’s sexual partners. If the result is negative, the patient will also be provided with reports and prevention information on STI prevention.

There is no doubt that this new measure will help to detect sexually transmitted infections more widely and earlier so that they can be treated faster and more effectively. Limit contamination risks Within the population!
