Free Mobile launches VoWiFi for its subscribers

A surprise appearance among some Free Mobile subscribers: they can now make calls directly via their WiFi network.

She had been waiting for last septemberafter an announcement by Xavier Niel’s operator, VoWiFi is now available for some Free Mobile subscribers. One of the most assiduous members of the Free community, Vache GTI was indeed able to use WiFi calls from his OnePlus 8.

A welcome launch, since all of Free Mobile’s competitors have already been offering this feature for a long time. The operator had however announced in 2017 to be reluctant to offer it, but finally changed its mind in 2021, announcing that the launch of this technology would take place after VoLTE (voice over 4G). Information confirmed by the Free_1337 account on Twitter.

What is VoWIFI?

This technology allows all of your communications (calls and SMS/MMS) to pass through the network WiFi on which you are logged in. It is not necessary to be connected to your own box, all networks WiFi are compatible and they can thus be used as a replacement connection in a building where 4G does not go well for example. The advantage also lies in better call quality when reception conditions are difficult.

If operators now offer VoWiFi, it is also a way for them to replace the femtocell solution, at a lower cost (Free has integrated it into its Freebox Revolution and Mini 4K), especially for customers who do not have mobile coverage in their residence with the operator.
