The well-known property in London’s posh Kensington district can be purchased for a sum of millions.

Freddie Mercury’s London estate is up for sale. His long-time partner Mary Austin, who remained his confidant even following the separation, is offering “Garden Lodge” for around 33 million francs. This is reported by the brokerage firm Knight Frank.

“It has been a joy to live here and I have many wonderful memories here,” Austin said in a statement. It has always been a place of peace, “a true artist’s home, and now it’s time to pass on that feeling of peace to the next person,” Austin continued.

After his death, Mercury left his estate and all his possessions to Austin. The singer originally bought the property in 1980 for just under 550,000 francs from a member of the Hoare banking family, as “The Times” reports.

First auction brought in millions

In September 2023, Austin had already auctioned around 1,500 items from the famous singer’s estate. On this occasion, the auction house Sotheby’s exhibited the collection and declared it “the longest and most spectacular exhibition in the company’s history.”

The items were auctioned in six auctions. The items included Mercury’s faux fur, red velvet and rhinestone crown and cape, which he wore on his final “God Save The Queen” tour. The handwritten manuscript for the cult anthem “We Are The Champions” also went under the hammer.

One of the most valuable works in his art collection is the painting “Type of Beauty” by James Jacques Tissot from 1880. In total, the auction brought in almost 44 million francs, with part of the proceeds going to charitable foundations.

Love and friendship

Austin met the Queen singer through lead guitarist Brian May. The saleswoman and the musician were in a relationship from 1970 to 1976. After the separation, the two continued to be close friends.

Austin worked as a secretary for the band Queen’s publishing company and accompanied them on their tours. When Mercury learned he was HIV positive in 1987, Mary Austin was the first to know.

The rock singer spent his final days at his home in Kensington. On November 24, 1991, he died at the age of 45 as a result of pneumonia.
