Franz Ferdinand Surprises Fans with a Cover of Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!”
Indie rock stalwarts Franz Ferdinand treated fans to an unexpected delight recently,
performing a cover of Chappell Roan’s hit song “Good Luck, Babe!” during a special Sofa Session for BBC Radio 2.
A Captivating Performance
The band’s rendition of Roan’s infectious summer anthem showcased their signature energetic sound. Lead singer Alex Kapranos infused the performance with his distinctive vocals, perfectly capturing the raw emotion of the lyrics.
During the session, Kapranos shared his admiration for Roan, calling her “an incredible artist.” He explained, “It’s just an amazing song by an incredible artist. It’s funny, you get some artists that have a moment, often it’s kind of divisive. Some people absolutely love them and some people hate them. But I’ve not come across anybody I know, none of my friends, nobody I know, who doesn’t like this artist. They’re just so good. This song’s incredible so we’re going to play it.”
Unexpected Cool Points
The setlist wasn’t the only thing surprising listeners. Kapranos also recounted a hilarious anecdote about his niece and pop icon Lady Gaga.
“Interestingly,” he shared, “my niece is now 16 and I’m suddenly cool to her because I told her that Lady Gaga broke her nose in a mosh pit at our gig when she was a high school student.”

**Alex:** Thanks for having me!
**Host:** So, Franz Ferdinand recently surprised fans with a cover of Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe!” during a BBC Radio 2 Sofa Session. What inspired this unexpected choice?
**Alex:** We’ve been huge fans of Chappell Roan for a while now. Her songwriting is fantastic, and “Good Luck, Babe!” is a real earworm. We’ve always loved exploring different genres and putting our own spin on things, so it felt like a natural fit.
**Host:** The performance has been getting rave reviews online. Fans seem genuinely thrilled with your take on the song. Were you pleased with how it turned out?
**Alex:** Absolutely! It was a lot of fun to record. We’ve always enjoyed playing live sessions and the Sofa Sessions are always a great atmosphere. The band really clicked and I think you can hear that energy in the recording.
**Host:** For those who may not be familiar with your work, Franz Ferdinand released an EP in 2011 called *Covers* which exclusively featured covers of songs from your own album *Tonight*. Is this a musical direction you’d like to explore further in the future?
**Alex:** You never know! We love experimenting and have no plans to limit ourselves. Right now, we’re focused on our own new music, but who knows what the future holds?
**Host:** Well, we’re certainly looking forward to hearing more from Franz Ferdinand, both original and covered! Thanks so much for joining us today, Alex.
**Alex:** Cheers!
