European Commissioner Frans Timmermans returns to Dutch politics following ten years in Brussels. He wants to pull the combined left and green PvdA/GroenLinks roster, the Volkskrant reports.
Frans Timmermans will leave the European Commission to run for Dutch national elections in November, leading the Labor Party and the Green Left Partyreported the newspaper De Volksrkant on Thursday.
Frans Timmermans has already informed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of his impending departure, according to the newspaper. As a reminder, he has been European Commissioner in charge of Climate Policy since 2019 and Vice-President of the European Commission.
The return to the Netherlands of the heavyweight of the Dutch left comes on the day when left-wing parties are predicted a resounding victory in a political poll. The PvdA and Groenlinks might together win 28 seats in the Lower House, thus becoming the largest party, ahead of the liberal VVD of resigning Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
The I&O Research survey was carried out last weekend among 2,736 Dutch people aged 18 or over.
An alliance of parties
The two left parties PvdA and GroenLinks announced on Monday that they will be running together in the November 22 elections. These were convened following the fall of the Rutte government.
The big question is whether hugely popular politician Pieter Omtzigt, who sits as an independent, will stand to the emperor with his own party. If he does, he might win 46 seats, according to the polls, leaving the left-wing combination with 21 seats.
