Reason: The man had evaded taxes on a large scale…

The case: According to the main customs office in Frankfurt, the German, who lives in Thailand, wanted to fly from Frankfurt to Dubai on July 4th. He dutifully reported the contents of his hand luggage: 27.3 kilos of gold worth more than 1.5 million euros!

The emigrant was able to testify that he had acquired the gold legally and needed it for his livelihood in Thailand. Problem: During a query, customs realized that the man had owed a North Rhine-Westphalian tax office more than 1.4 million euros in income tax, solidarity and late payment surcharges since 2019.

Subject area C at the main customs office in Frankfurt enforced the open claim and confiscated the gold. Now the man has six weeks to settle the tax claim. If he doesn’t make it, the gold goes to NRW.
