Frank Rubio will face a huge problem when he returns to Earth after spending a year in space – FayerWayer

Frank Rubio is on track to be the American astronaut who has spent the longest time in space. Most likely, the scientist of Latin origin will stay for 355 days on a mission that should have lasted six months, but was extended due to technical problems in the Russian ship in which he traveled.

The record, for now, is held by Mark Vande Hei, who served 341 days on the International Space Station (ISS). Most likely, this time will be passed, and although it is an important achievement for science and for Frank himself, there are several problems that he will have to face on his return home.

About nine days ago, Rubio offered statements for a group of children, in a video call that the astronaut made from space. It was an initiative of the Ibero-American Scientific and Cultural Newscast (NCC), the Association of Ibero-American Educational and Cultural Televisions (ATEI) and NASA.

He answered questions from dozens of children in Latin America and Spain, in Spanish. And within his testimony he spoke of what it means to be subjected to microgravity. Although the ISS is just 400 kilometers from the surface, a region where 90 percent of Earth’s gravity is still felt, the station’s constantly dropping speed means astronauts can float all the time.

It will be a year under this same modality that represents a problem for Frank Rubio, who will surely have a hard time walking when he touches dry land once more. “After eight months he feels natural. I think it will be very strange to return to Earth,” said the astronaut in his talk with the children.
