Eleven months have passed since Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2018. However, there is no movement toward a ceasefire, and the war is likely to expand.
The West supplies main battle tanks one following another
On January 25, German Chancellor Scholz announced that Ukraine would be providing the German Leopard 2-A6 tanks. For the time being, I will give you 14 tanks, one of the strongest in the world and used by many European countries. If an importing country wants to supply the tank to Ukraine, it needs approval from Germany, the country of manufacture.
Poland was quick to indicate its intention to provide, but Germany was cautious regarding doing so. This was because they feared that the supply of tanks would escalate the war, and because many citizens were once morest the supply of weapons to other countries, reflecting on the Second World War caused by Nazi Germany.
However, under strong pressure from the United States, Great Britain, Poland, and the Baltic states, the Scholz administration was forced to make a difficult decision in order not to disturb the unity of NATO.
The German Ministry of Defense is considering providing 88 tanks, which can be combined with other holdings to form two tank battalions. Preparations such as personnel training are required, and three months are required before dispatch.
Britain has already agreed to deliver 14 Challenger 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine. In addition, President Biden announced on the 25th that he would provide 31 US main battle tanks “M1 Abrams”. Deployment of this tank will also take several months, and unlike the diesel-fueled Leopard 2, the gas turbine engine requires jet fuel, making it difficult to operate in Ukraine.
