Will François Vidal be the next editorial director of Echos ? As everyone expected in the economic daily, it is indeed the deputy editorial director that the supervisory board proposed, Thursday September 21, unanimously of its members according to our information, to appoint as Nicolas’s successor. Rod. Mr. Vidal had made his candidacy official the day before, during the 3 p.m. editorial conference.

Until the management of LVMH, owner of the Les Echos-Le Parisien Group, suddenly dismissed Mr. Barré from his position in March, François Vidal assisted him, as did the editorialist at France Inter Dominique Seux. He is also the one who has taken over the interim since.

This appointment procedure might have seemed like a formality. But, scalded by the fate reserved for their leader, the employees have taken advantage of these last months to ensure that this is not the case. “What was fundamental and priority for usexplains a journalist, is that the exercise of our right of veto on the appointment of Nicolas Barré’s replacement is guaranteed. »

The electorate redefined

To do this, it was necessary to redefine the electoral body so that freelancers and occasional collaborators (more likely to abstain and therefore approve by default the candidacy submitted to the vote) do not jeopardize this right of opposition. After the group’s CEO Pierre Louette opposed this possibility, representatives of the luxury group and three independent directors of the supervisory board (the director of the Sciences Po journalism school, Alice Antheaume, the banker of André Lévy-Lang cases and the jurist Nicolas Molfessis) reached an agreement. Among the 245 voters, around thirty will be freelancers.

François Vidal will present his project to employees on Monday September 25, in accordance with the request made to him by the Society of Journalists. According to internal sources, the current editors-in-chief David Barroux and Lucie Robequain might be his deputies. After the shock of Mr. Barré’s dismissal, which the editorial team attributed to a shareholder unhappy with some of their articles, it observed a signature strike in June to reiterate its attachment to its independence.

Questioned by a journalist on Thursday morning, during an information point for the group’s thirty-one press brands, Pierre Louette said he expected the next editorial director to be “up to par” from the previous one, but also “a good journalist and a good manager”. The editorial team is expected to make a decision on September 28. For the appointment of François Vidal to be final, it must not be rejected by more than half of the registered journalists.
