Franco-Belgian Joint Effort: Fire Rescue Operation in Wattrelos, France

The fire broke out in a festive room, on the French side, rue Jules Guesde, in Wattrelos. The roadway has the particularity of being shared along its length with that of the rue herseautoise du Petit Oudenarde.

The localization therefore involved a Franco-Belgian rescue operation to ensure the best reactivity.

The French police and that of the Mouscron police station worked together on the ground.

Ditto for the men of the fire: it was first a pump from across the Quiévrain that arrived. It was then joined in stride by two pumpers and a cistern from the Mouscron barracks, a self-ladder from the Évregnies barracks, then, finally, a few more French reinforcements.

The reason for the fire is unknown. It was a local resident, on the Herseautois side, who called the yelled police station and 112 following hearing explosions and seeing the flames, he told us.

The fire remained very localized and, with no wind, the towering column of smoke rising vertically did not cause a problem.

As a precaution, the nearby “Les Glycines” nursing home reacted very quickly by closing all the windows of residents that would have remained open.

Coming from France, the section was closed at rue de la Citadelle towards which you had to branch off. ©EdA
