the essentials The creator of the Fabulous Trobadors, who lives in Tarn-et-Garonne in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, talks regarding what links him to Francis Cabrel one month before the release of the record “Un piece de Sicre”.

“A piece of Sicre” is the title of the vinyl 45 rpm by Francis Cabrel which will be released on October 13. The singer from Astaffort pays homage to his Toulouse friend Claude Sicre.

An attention that goes straight to the heart of the Fabulous Trobador, happy citizen of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val. “It’s a song regarding Toulouse, regarding the countryside. I’m in the chorus but Francis also quotes his friends BigFlo and Oli and Amokrane.”

This “piece of Sicre, therefore of positivity, kindness, humor, erudition, all that in a black café”, says the singer from Astaffort, will be accompanied by a clip which will be filmed on September 26 in Toulouse . “I will participate,” announces Claude Sicre who might have found Francis Cabrel for the Cahors Book Fair, where he was giving a conference.

“I invited Cabrel but he is kept in Paris.”

It’s only a postponement because the two men have “lots of projects together”, reveals Claude Sicre. “At the beginning of 2024, I will release a record, produced by Francis Cabrel and Bleu Citron, and a very long tale. This double album will include lots of oddities, rap songs too. It will be anti-commercial. I will present it in Montauban.”

Sicre has another idea in mind… linked to Montauban and the Osage Indians. The Saint-Antoninois sponsors the Oklahoma-Occitania association which, since 1989, has established contacts with the descendants of the three Osages who found refuge in Montauban in 1829 following two years of wandering in Europe and were able to return to their country thanks to to the solidarity of the residents.

A story from which Claude Sicre wants to draw inspiration “for a film project, an Occitan western”.

Cabrel, a true rural

In the meantime, he talks regarding what links him to Francis Cabrel. “I’m an urban guy living in a cool place in the countryside, but he’s a real rural guy.”

Their first meeting dates back to 1978 in Cordes-sur-Ciel in rather comical circumstances. “I had formed a small group to contest the holding of a FR3 Nationale program which broadcast live in small towns. It was a very condescending program. Cabrel was to go on the air that day, but we made noise during the live broadcast and the program was interrupted. They sent the gendarmes to us but I had a friend who spoke Occitan very well and made the gendarmes double over with laughter. During the interruption of the broadcast, I I went to see Cabrel at his hotel to explain to him the meaning of our action, he understood very well.”

Cabrel is therefore linked to the first media sensation of the founder of the Riga-Raga group. “They even talked regarding it at the Council of Ministers with Giscard,” laughs Claude Sicre.

It is with an almost brotherly affection that he evokes the career of his junior, 6 years old, a guitarist and singer who became one of the greatest authors of French song.

“Francis was a fan of North American music. He chose the country folk style with lyrics in French. It was a profound choice that he made. He might have sung pop or rock’n’roll but it was his love for a deep and rural America that inspired him.”
