Paris. French authorities have launched a preliminary investigation into far-right leader Marine Le Pen over her alleged involvement in illegal financing during the 2022 presidential election.

Paris prosecutors told The Associated Press that the investigation, launched on July 2, involves alleged acceptance of financial loans, embezzlement of property, fraud and forgery. He gave no details.

Le Pen has yet to comment on the matter.

The investigation follows the release of a report in 2023 by the National Campaign Accounts and Political Financing Commission, the body responsible for monitoring election campaign spending. In French elections, candidates are prohibited from spending more than a certain amount.

According to local media reports, Le Pen is not the only candidate in the 2022 campaign who is under investigation.

His far-right party National Rally was accused of inflating candidate spending in the 2012 legislative elections, and the Supreme Court rejected the party’s appeal and fined it.
