Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs, star running backs for the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders, respectively, failed to reach an agreement to extend their contracts with the aforementioned teams at the NFL deadline scheduled for this Monday.
As a consequence of this disagreement, both players will serve as franchise players during the 2023 season if they choose to participate.
Teams use this franchise tag to retain a player who is regarding to become a free agent for an extra year without restrictions, that is, those who can sign with the organization they want.
Under these conditions in that extra season, the player will receive the average of the five best salaries of the elements that occupy his position.

In the case of running backs Saquan Barkley and Josh Jacobs, if they decide to play they will become the list of lowest-paid franchise players in the NFL.
The median salary for quarterbacks with this tag for 2023 is $32.4 million a year; linebackers follow with an average of $20.9 million dollars; third are receivers and defensive ends with $19.7 million.
For his part, running backs appear with $10.1 million in 10th place on football’s 11-position listjust above kickers who earn a median of $5.3 million.
Barkley has threatened to sit out the season to avoid the deal with the Giants; and Jacobs has already said he won’t show up for the Raiders’ opening training camp that starts in late July.
Neither can renegotiate for a better deal until following the 2023 season ends; both are scheduled to become free agents in the 2024 season.
In 2022 Jacobs led the league with 1,653 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. Barkley was the fourth-best rusher with 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Tony Pollard, star running back for the Dallas Cowboys, did sign the agreement that places him as a franchise player for the 2023 season.
