The Italian actress, screenwriter and director Francesca Guidato demands clarity regarding the background to her husband’s death. She and Berger married in 1994 but have lived separately since 2007. The two never got divorced and always stayed in touch.
“I am shocked by the tragic news of his death. But I want clarity regarding the death of my husband and regarding the entire last period of his life in Austria,” she said.
Trip to Salzburg planned
“Too many things do not add up and the cause of death is not clear. I will call on the Austrian judicial authorities by all means to clarify the true cause of death, the circumstances and the way he has lived for the past few months,” said the 64-year-old to the Adnkronos news agency. She was planning a trip to Salzburg, where Berger lived.
Contact with Berger was not possible
Francesca Guidato has been unable to contact her husband for the last year. “He was surrounded by people I didn’t like and who didn’t calm me down. I saw a circle of people around him who weren’t right. I think they treated him badly. I can’t say what’s happening is,” emphasized the actress.
She complained of “obstruction” with which they tried to keep her away from Berger.”Helmut had explained to the media several times that he wanted me to take care of him in old age. The two have been in constant contact over the years. “Helmut traveled a lot, but we always knew something regarding each other. What worries Francesca Guidato the most and makes him suspicious is the silence regarding the reasons for her husband’s death. His manager, who announced Berger’s death on Thursday, described it as “unexpected”. “I was told today that he died at 4 a.m. at home, but that’s not enough for me,” said Guidato.
For many years, Berger was the partner and muse of the Italian director Luchino Visconti, in whose films he achieved world fame. Born in Austria, he also had numerous affairs with women. He became engaged to Marisa Berenson, but the relationship fell through. He later married Guidato. Berger died on Thursday.
