France’s Qualification for Euro 2024: A Message of Peace in the Midst of Tragedy

After the qualification of the French team for Euro 2024 thanks to its victory in the Netherlands on Friday (2-1), Didier Deschamps delivered a “message of peace” in reaction to the victims in Israel and Gaza, but also to the assassination of a professor in Arras.

The qualification of the French football team for Euro 2024 may have brought a little smile in a particularly dark context. Before the kick-off of the Netherlands – France match, concluded this Friday with the victory of the Blues (2-1), a minute of silence was observed at the Johan-Cruyff Arena to pay tribute to the victims in Israel and to Gaza, but also to the professor murdered in Arras.

“I have a big thought for them”

Coach Didier Deschamps, at a press conference, wanted to spare a thought for the victims of these tragic events: “These are always difficult subjects, what happened in Arras. For all the people who are there bottom, the loved ones, the family of the victim… I have a big thought for them. I am not going to be original but a message of peace throughout the world. And through what there may have been, in relation to what the French and Dutch Federations decided before the match, it is important to have these thoughts in these tragic moments.”

UEFA said this week that it was not planning a specific tribute for victims of the terrible events in Israel and Gaza but would accept requests from federations to pay tribute to victims on both sides.
