Anyone who works for democracy in the world cannot just rely on the economy and free trade. That was one of the central theses of a lecture given by France’s European State Secretary Laurence Boone on Tuesday at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. In addition to WU students, the target audience included their colleagues from nine partner universities who are currently studying in Vienna. Nor can Europe rely on the transatlantic relationship when it comes to its own security, Boone explained, and pleaded for more European sovereignty and strategic autonomy: “We must take our fate into our own European hands.”
