Two employees of a construction company died in an accident on Wednesday on the site of a new gondola lift to provide access to the Mer de Glace glacier, near Chamonix, said the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc.

A third person was slightly injured in this accident, which occurred downstream from the Montenvers site, on a support pylon for a temporary service cable (blondin), a device that was to be used to transport materials from the construction site to the new gondola, the group said in a press release.

22 and 23 years old

This construction site installation was intended to “minimize the use of trains and helicopters for supplying the site”. The two victims, aged 22 and 23, were swept away by the fall of the pylon, reports the Dauphine Libere. All the people involved in the accident are employees of an outside company in charge of this work.

Following this accident, the Montenvers Mer de Glace site (train – gondola – visits) will remain closed on Thursday, specifies the group.
