After another painful qualification at the expense of Portugal, the French team will face Spain in the semi-finals on Tuesday July 9.
After a narrow qualification once morest Belgium in the round of 16 (1-0) on Monday 1 July, France validated its ticket for the semi-finals by winning once once more in the toughest of times at the expense of Portugal on Friday 5 July in the quarter-finals (0-0, 5-3 on penalties).
The last French shooter, Theo Hernandez, completed the Blues’ clean sheet in the penalty shootout, while the Portuguese Joao Felix had previously hit the post.
A deliverance which was however obtained at the end of a still very dull match where the Blues only very rarely managed to show themselves to be dangerous offensively, but once once more relied on their iron rearguard led by their defender William Saliba and their goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
Since 1998
France had not won a penalty shootout since the quarter-final of the 1998 World Cup once morest Italy (0-0, 4-3 on penalties) and had three previous disappointments in the exercise: the 2006 and 2022 World Cups and Euro 2021.
In the semi-finals, the Blues will face Spain, who had eliminated Germany a little earlier, 2-1 following extra time.
The French and the Spanish will therefore fight for a place in the final on Tuesday 9 July at 9pm on the pitch of the Munich Arena in Munich. The match will be broadcast live on M6 and beINSports 1.
