France: Protests following a 17-year-old boy was shot dead by police in Paris

Protests erupted in Paris following the police shooting of a teenage driver who ran past a checkpoint in the suburb of Nanterre, west of the capital.

17-year-old Nael was driving a rented car early Tuesday, when two policemen stopped him following passing a checkpoint, before one of them shot him, as a video clip showed.

The French Interior Minister confirmed the opening of an investigation into the incident, the interrogation of police officers, and the detention of the policeman accused of shooting the driver on charges of murder. He described the incident as “very shocking”.

Yassin Bouzrou, the lawyer for the dead man’s family, told local media that the outcome of the investigation must be awaited, “but the pictures clearly show the policeman deliberately and carelessly killing a young man.”

The family accused the police of “lying” because they initially claimed that the car had tried to run over the police.
