France Protests and Riots: Total Losses of 55 Million Euros and Support for State of Emergency

The total losses resulting from riots and protests in France, following the killing of a young man by French police bullets a few days ago, amounted to regarding 55 million euros, while an opinion poll revealed that the French support the imposition of a state of emergency, following the recent violence.

According to reports, the losses in public property in Paris amounted to regarding 20 million euros, while the losses in private property amounted to regarding 35 million euros.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, called for an end to the protests, which followed the killing of the 17-year-old, Nael, of Algerian-Moroccan origin.

Hidalgo also called for police support to carry out its work in protecting public property, and called on elected officials and politicians to choose their words and statements carefully.

In statements to French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, who is on a tour of the city of Reims, 144 km northeast of Paris, today, Monday, he said, “We must dialogue with the suburbs, but we must be firm with the rioters and not find social excuses for them.”

The French support imposing a state of emergency

At the same time, an opinion poll, conducted by the French newspaper Le Figaro in partnership with the company IFOP, revealed that 69% of French people support declaring a state of emergency in the country following the recent violence in France.

The poll showed that the vast majority of the French, 69%, condemns the ongoing acts of violence, such as attacks on police stations, destruction of public and private property, fires, and troublemaking.

The poll also showed that the right-wing leader, Marine Le Pen, is the least affected by the events that struck the country, as it revealed that 39% of the respondents are satisfied with her positions, compared to 33% for French President Emmanuel Macron, and 34% for the current French Minister of Interior.

The French Interior Ministry said that fewer than 160 people were arrested overnight in connection with riots that rocked cities across France following the police killing of the young man, Nael.

The ministry stated that 157 people were arrested overnight, compared to 700 the night before, and more than 1,300 on Friday night.

On the same level, reports said that the third person, who was inside the car at the moment Nael was killed, went to a police station to present his version of what happened.

Reports indicated that the police were “now” listening to his account.
