“The results are not good at all”

In France, sales of new vehicles fell by 10% in May, compared to the same month in 2021, according to information published on Wednesday by the Automotive Platform. This is the twelfth consecutive month of decline in a market paralyzed by the shortage of electronic chips.

Despite two additional days of activity, the automotive industry French recorded a 10.09% drop over one year, with 126,813 registrations. “Results are not good at all. Shortage of semiconductors continues to slow shipments”indicated François Roudier of the Automotive platform.

“How might we take back the vehicles lost in the second half”?

“It is difficult to see how we might recover the vehicles lost in the second half”, according to Mr. Roudier. He also believes that 2022 might be worse than 2020, half paralyzed by the coronavirus pandemic.

From January to May, sales of light utility vehicles fell by nearly 25% (147,161 registrations). Market leader Stellantis (Peugeot, Citroën, Opel) has recorded a decline of 22.15% since the start of the year, while Renault has suffered a decline of 15.45%. Volkswagen, the third market player in France, experienced a fall of 22.12%.
