The prefect of Martinique on Friday decreed a ban on demonstrations, gatherings and protest rallies in Fort-de-France and three other municipalities until Monday morning, in response to nights of urban violence linked to a mobilization against the high cost of living.
This decision, signed by Prefect Jean-Christophe Bouvier, aims to maintain public order and reduce the damage that disrupts the daily lives of residents. The order stipulates that these gatherings are prohibited on public roads, unless an exemption is granted by the sub-prefects.
The municipalities affected include Fort-de-France, Lamentin, Ducos and Robert. A curfew is also in effect in certain districts of Fort-de-France and Lamentin from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. until Monday.
To strengthen security, the eighth Republican Security Company (CRS), specialized in the management of urban violence, will be deployed on the island. Despite the curfew, incidents have taken place, with flaming roadblocks reported and several arrests.
This situation is part of a context of growing tensions since the beginning of a movement against the high cost of living in Martiniquewhere food prices are significantly higher than in mainland France.
The prefecture announced that a new round table on this theme would be organized soon with various local stakeholders to address the economic concerns of residents.
