For the first time in its history, Benin became world champion of pétanque in mixed doubles. The locals dominated the French pair (13-8), made up of Dylan Rocher and Audrey Bandiera.
Much awaited day in Benin… and very special. While Dylan Rocher and Audrey Bandiera were due to play their mixed doubles final early in the morning, the rain fell on Cotonou. Finally postponed to the beginning of the followingnoon, this final was therefore held on muddy and difficult terrain… in front of an audience fully committed to the cause of the Beninese.
A colossal support which supports Laïma Sambo and Marcel Gbetable, the two local players. The latter play to perfection from the first lead and open the score: 3-0. It is the two Beninese who best take the measure of the field and the atmosphere, adding one more point (4-0).
In front of an audience with little respect for French players, Dylan Rocher and Audrey Bandiera try to get back together. But Marcel Gbetable lines up diamond following diamond. The young Beninese impresses and allows his team to take the break (6-0). The Blues open their counter in the next end (6-3), but Benin gets closer to winning (9-3).
Dylan Rocher heckled by the public
Close to winning, the Beninese seem to be won over by the pressure, which allows France to score two new points thanks to the skill of Audrey Bandiera (9-5). But the Blues fail to take advantage of the locals’ sluggishness and it is Benin who come within three points of winning (10-5).
The moment chosen by Dylan Rocher to enter his game. The Team SPORTMAG player lines up the tiles, but it only makes one more point for France (10-6). Same thing in the next match: Benin completely misses out. But with five balls in hand once morest zero, France once more adds a single point (10-7).
Despite missed chances, the Blues are nibbling. Third consecutive lead with a point, allowing France to come back closer than ever to its opponent (10-8). In this part, it’s “yours, mine” with Benin which adds a point to its capital (11-8).
The French’s luck has passed. In the next end, the tricolor imprecision allows Benin to win 13-8, which thus becomes world champion in mixed doubles. For Dylan Rocher and Audrey Bandiera, it’s inevitably bitter-tasting money.
