France: here are the 27 ministers of the new Macron government

The Elysée Palace announced on Friday the composition of the new government four days following the Head of State Emmanuel Macron appointed Elisabeth Borne as Prime Minister.

The new team, which includes 13 women and 14 men, was unveiled by Elysee Secretary General Alexis Kohler nearly a month following Emmanuel Macron was re-elected for a second term.

It includes new faces while other outgoing ministers have been kept in their posts such as those of Economy and Finance Bruno le Maire, Interior Gérald Darmanin and Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti, as well as the secretary of State for European Affairs, Clément Beaune.

Other members of the former government changed ministerial portfolios. Thus, Marc Fesneau, hitherto Minister of Relations with Parliament, inherited Agriculture.

Olivia Grégoire leaves the Social, Solidarity and Responsible Economy to take over as government spokesperson, the Minister previously in charge of Industry, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, has been appointed to Energy Transition, while Amélie de Montchalin, until he then Minister of Transformation and the Public Service, saw herself propelled to the head of the new Ministry of Ecological Planning and Territories.

Gabriel Attal, spokesperson for the outgoing executive, was promoted to the Ministry of Public Accounts. In Foreign Affairs, one of the key ministers, Catherine Colonna, current French ambassador to London and former minister for European affairs and government spokesperson under the mandates of Jacques Chirac, succeeded Jean-Yves Le Drian.

Among the new figures on the government team, mention is made in particular of Pap Ndiaye, a specialist in American history, who has been appointed Minister of National Education, Rima Abdul Malak, adviser to the President of the Republic, took the reins of the Ministry of Culture. Stanislas Guerini, General Delegate of Renaissance, inherits the Civil Service.

Sébastien Lecornu inherited the Ministry of the Armed Forces, replacing Florence Parly. The first Council of Ministers will be held on Monday around President Macron, also indicated the secretary general of the Elysée. The new executive will face a difficult national and international agenda with the war in Ukraine, galloping inflation and sluggish growth.
