France Heat Wave Update: Temperature Soar Across the Country, Possible Heat Wave Looming

Since the end of May, France has been facing exceptionally high temperatures, sometimes exceeding the high heat threshold of 30°C. And while weather conditions should remain stable for the next few days, a potential heat wave might set in.

A dominant sun. While most of the departments, in the north as in the south, suffer metrological deterioration, sometimes marked by violent storms, temperatures remain exceptionally high throughout the territory. And the latter even exceeded the high heat threshold of 30°C, synonymous with a very hot day, with in particular 31°C recorded in Auxerre on Friday.

And that’s not all since, since the end of May, the maximum temperature indicator has not been below 25°C. Concretely, the maximum temperatures have only increased, everywhere on the territory, recording at least 25°C for a consecutive period of at least 15 days. “Over the period 1947-2022, there is no series of this type having started in May”, wrote on Twitter Gaétan Heymes, forecaster at Météo-France.

While temperatures during the month of June should be above normal for the seasons, a heat wave might appear in France in the coming days.

Temperatures still rising

Indeed, as of this Tuesday, the beautiful sunny spells should be back in several northern cities and temperatures should remain high, approaching 30°C, according to forecasts from Meteo France. Throughout the week, we should register 28°C in Rouen, Amiens, Lille and Auxerre (Tuesday) and up to 29°C in Paris (Tuesday), Montpellier (Friday) and Perpignan (Saturday).

As Gaéton Heymes points out, the “earliest series with at least 15 days at over 25°C began on June 6, in 2003”. During this month, heat records were recorded in France such as 36.3°C in Ardèche on the 6th of the month, 37.9°C in Riorges (Loire) on the 10th and 40°C in Gignac (Hérault) on the 20th of June. .

This severe heat wave caused the death of nearly 15,000 in France that summer. In 2022, the longest streak lasted 69 days.

Contacted by CNEWS at the end of May, Météo-France had also estimated that “the most likely scenario is that of a warmer quarter than normal with, however, a less strong signal than for the summer of 2022” in terms of temperatures, noting “a significant evolution of the planetary climate system with the El Niño phenomenon which takes place during the summer, without notable influence at the temperate latitudes of the northern hemisphere”.
