Saccording to Eurostat, in 2022 there were 2.09 million “cross-border” workers in the European Union, that is to say, according to the official definitionworking in a country other than their country of residence and rejoindestroying their home at least once a week. This number represented 1.1% of the employed population. It has more than tripled since 2000, when it stood at 580,000.
At the regional level, the province of Luxembourg in Belgium comes first with the highest proportion (32%) of cross-border workers, followed by those of Trier in Germany (18%), Lorraine in France (14%), Franche- County in France and Vorarlberg in Austria (10%).

France is the country from the EU who matters most large number of workers transborder crossers. According to INSEE data for the year 2020, it has precisely 443,825. Switzerland, due to the high salaries offered there, is the first country of destination for French cross-border workers. It welcomes 215,178, twice as many as in 2000. Next come Luxembourg (95,838), Germany (50,773), Belgium (45,736), Monaco (31,388) and Spain (4 912).
A figure that has doubled
The number of cross-border workers residing in France has more than doubled since the start of the century and has increased by 22% since 2015.in the Grand Est region is the one with the most (183 000), in front, thereuvergne-Rhône-Alpes (125 000).

Finally, in the opposite direction, the number of cross-border workers coming from neighboring countries to work in France is on the other hand estimated at only around 15,000dont 8 500 originating from Belgium, 4,000 from Germany, 1,500 from Italy et 1,100 from Spain.
