France Casino Group Reorganization Plan: Potential Job Losses and Store Closures Revealed

Up to 3,300 jobs in the Casino group could be eliminated, while 26 stores in France are threatened with permanent closure due to a lack of buyers. Here is the list of affected brands.

French distributor Casino, which changed hands at the end of March last year, presented its reorganization plan to employee representatives on Wednesday 24 April.

It anticipates between 1,293 and 3,267 layoffs nationally, depending on the number of large-format stores and logistics warehouses not yet sold that will find receivers by next September, Casino indicated.

In detail, 1,293 positions will be eliminated within the group’s head office functions, which may be added, “fails to find buyers” up to 1,974 positions in hypermarkets and supermarkets as well as in certain logistics platforms.

Three stores affected in Occitanie

A total of 26 stores in France, which are still waiting for buyers, are threatened with permanent closure. These are, according to the list communicated by our colleagues: TF1 des Casino de:

Stores sold to Auchan and Intermarché

The group, which still employed 200,000 staff worldwide, including 50,000 in France, at the end of 2022, signed an agreement in July that provided for the restructuring of an unsustainable debt, with a change in the shareholding at the same deadline.

In January last year, Casino had already announced that it had sold 288 supermarkets and hypermarkets to Auchan and Intermarché. The group still owns, among other things, the brands Franprix, Monoprix, Naturalia and CDiscount.
