On the eve of the opening of the Paris Book Festival, GfK publishes the figures for the French book market for the first quarter of 2023.
At the end of March, the French bought 71 million pounds, generating a turnover of 850 million euros. This is an increase of 1% compared to the same period in 2022 and +19% compared to 2019 activity.
Novels and comics numbers
General literature is doing well with 1 book purchased out of 4, up in number of copies (+3%) and in turnover (+4%).
Comics, and especially Manga, are down for the first time in several years. The dropout is -12% and -6% in turnover, according to the institute.
Overall, the book is holding up well in the face of the crisis. “In this perspective, book sales are preserved,” comments Sandrine Vigroux, Head of Cultural Assets expertise. Only 21% of consumers thought they would reduce their book purchases in 2023, far behind Furniture / Decoration projects (1/3 of consumers) and even the Food budget (28%). This is partly explained by the Evasion – Culture side with a very controlled budget that a book offers compared to other cultural activities. »
Other trends
-The 3 main genres, General Literature, Comics/Manga and Youth, account for 2/3 of book purchases in the first quarter of 2023.
-The Youth and Leisure/Practical life universes continue to see their sales decline, to -4% and -5% respectively in volume.
-The Tourism / Travel universe is regaining color with sales at +26% in number of copies but remains below pre-pandemic benchmarks (-17%).
-Sales of Fine Arts books are not confined to the end-of-year celebrations. The French bought more than 1.2 million books dedicated to the fine arts at the end of March (+8% vs Q1 2022 and +16% vs Q1 2019).
