France Assos Santé Barometer 2024: Addressing Challenges in the French Health System

France Assos Santé has just revealed the results of its Barometer of the rights of sick people for the year 2024, revealing overall satisfaction with the French health system but highlighting persistent challenges. The French remain largely satisfied with their experience with the health system, particularly with regard to their relationships with health professionals, according to the barometer.

However, nearly 4 in 10 French people express a somewhat or very negative experience regarding obtaining medical appointments. Despite this, the general practitioner remains the first point of reference for navigating the health system, although the use of the Internet for this purpose is constantly increasing.

Knowledge of the rights of sick people is majority among the French, with particular recognition of rights such as respect for medical confidentiality and access to care. However, certain rights, such as the right to modify and object to the use of health data, remain less known and require additional efforts to increase their visibility. In addition, the awareness of health system user representatives remains low, which highlights a need for awareness and education in this area.

A worrying trend revealed by the barometer is the increase in drug shortages, affecting a growing number of French people.

Furthermore, a third of people facing these shortages are not offered an alternative, highlighting a major challenge in terms of accessibility to medical treatments.

With regard to pain management and respect for end-of-life preferences, the barometer highlights significant gaps.

While 4 out of 10 French people believe that the wishes and preferences of their loved ones at the end of life have been fully respected, an equivalent number believes that this respect has only been partial. In addition, a quarter of respondents believe that the suffering of their loved one at the end of life has not been properly taken care of and relieved.

The survey, carried out from 06.02.2024 to 19.02.2024, offers an overview of the persistent challenges regarding the rights of sick people in France, highlighting the need to continue efforts to improve accessibility to care, strengthen awareness of the rights of patients and improve the quality of end-of-life care.
