New York (ots/PRNewswire) France’s Secretary of State for Development and International Partnerships, Ms. Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, and ECW Executive Director, Yasmine Sherif, are calling on donors and the private sector to urgently provide a total of $1.5 billion.

At the Global CITIZEN Festival in New York this weekend, French Secretary of State for Development and International Partnerships, Ms. Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, and Executive Director of Education Cannot Wait, Yasmine Sherif, announced new, additional funding from the French government worth €40 million .

Education Cannot Wait (ECW) has now mobilized $870 million for its 2023-2026 strategic plan to give 20 million vulnerable children the security, hope and opportunity for a quality education.

“Promoting education and emancipation in the world is an absolute priority for France. The message of the Paris Pact for people and planet is that we must all do our part so that every country can alleviate poverty and combat climate change,” said French Secretary of State for Development and International Partnerships, Chrysoula Zacharopoulou. “This includes the States that need to support development policies with sufficient resources. For this reason, I am particularly pleased to announce, on behalf of France and President Macron, the allocation of 40 million euros to support the actions of the ECW for the 2023-2026 cycle.”

“With this new bold and generous contribution, France is leading by example,” said ECW Executive Director Yasmine Sherif. “We call on government donors, philanthropic foundations and the private sector to follow this example and join our collective efforts to “To mobilize a total of $1.5 billion by 2026 to provide 20 million crisis-affected girls and boys with quality education so they can learn, grow and rebuild their societies.”

Worldwide have around 224 million children no chance of quality education due to armed conflict, displacement, climate-related disasters and other protracted crises. They urgently need support to maintain their right to a high-quality, inclusive education.

Together with strategic partners, ECW has already reached almost 9 million girls and boys in some of the world’s worst crisis areas.

Although donors are committed, the funding gap has actually widened in recent years. Humanitarian appeals for education in emergencies have nearly tripled from $1.1 billion in 2019 to nearly $3 billion at the end of 2022.
