France 6G: Securing Digital Sovereignty and Accelerating Future Network Development

“France 6G”, here is the name of the new platform on which the government is working. Its objective will be to coordinate the actions of the various players with a view to the arrival of the sixth generation of mobile networks. The government has revealed that it is already working on this project, scheduled for 2030, when 5G has barely been deployed in France. Indeed, its network is only present on 10% of French mobile plans.

In a communiqué, Sylvie Retailleau, Minister of Higher Education and Research, and Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister Delegate for the Digital Transition and Telecommunications, announced at the Institut Mines Telecom, the launch of the Research Program (PEPR) “Networks of the Future”. The project will also be co-managed by the Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Institut Mines Télécom (IMT).

Lower energy consumption

6G also has an undeniable advantage for its future users since its speed is estimated to be up to 100 times higher than 5G. Moreover, while environmental issues are increasingly being raised, 6G should also be accompanied by a drop in energy consumption per gigabyte of data.

“This program is part of the France 2030 “5G and Networks of the Future” Acceleration Strategy, which aims to position France in an essential market to guarantee its digital sovereignty”, can we read in the press release. . The project will thus lead to the creation of the platform called “France 6G”. The government commits a budget of 65 million euros for this program.
