HOUSTON — Framber Valdez threw a four-hit ball to lead the Houston Astros to a 2-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep.
Valdez (4-4) struck out seven without issuing a walk, pitching a gem to bounce back after giving up seven hits and four runs in his last outing, pitching just four season-low innings. fifth complete game of his career and first since Sept. 12 against Detroit.
He allowed speedy Esteury Ruiz a double with two out in the sixth, before retiring the next seven batters and being singled by Nick Allen to lead off the ninth. He but he retired the next three rivals, to close the game.
It’s the third time Oakland has been shutout in the last 10 games and the seventh time overall this season.
The victory extends Houston’s best streak of the season to seven, which is also the longest in the majors.
James Kaprielian (0-4) allowed three hits and one run, both season lows, with four walks in five innings and remains winless this season.
