More financial resources, the reintroduction of compulsory militia exercises and the Federal Army being made more attractive as an employer are needed
Vienna (OTS) – On the occasion of today’s “Conscription Day”, FPÖ military spokesman and chairman of the parliamentary national defense committee NAbg. Mag. Volker Reifenberger emphasized the importance of comprehensive national defense and the Federal Army, which, in accordance with the Federal Constitution, is responsible for the military sector: “In order to fulfill this mandate, the Federal Government must also provide the Federal Army with the appropriate financial resources. But there can be no question of this in the black-green coalition; the defense budget approved just a few months ago is too small, especially for a neutral state. Two percent of GDP would be required here so that our army can fulfill its tasks accordingly, but this year the budget is unlikely to even reach one percent!”
In addition to underfunding, a lack of personnel is the biggest problem for the armed forces and affects both professional and militia soldiers. “Unfortunately, our armed forces are no longer competitive as employers, so many soldiers are switching to the private sector or other areas of the public service. A central key to remedying this problem is higher salaries, from the ranks to the non-commissioned officers and the officers. In order to make the soldier’s profession more attractive once more, we libertarians only submitted a proposal in November, but it was rejected by both government parties,” said Reifenberger, who renewed the liberal demand for a reintroduction of compulsory militia exercises: “A return to The tried-and-tested model, consisting of six months of basic military service and two months of compulsory militia exercises, is essential so that the Federal Army once more receives the necessary personnel for the militia. By abolishing this system, the then ÖVP Defense Minister Platter initiated a breach of the constitution, which the governing parties are negligently prolonging!”
Precisely because of the perpetual neutrality, which is being increasingly undermined by the black-green federal government with the support of the SPÖ and NEOS, Austria is obliged to ensure the full functionality of the national military defense: “Stable neutrality requires a strong federal army and a government that “This also lives and does not break, as is the case with participation in the NATO Sky Shield project.”
