Foxglove, leeches, penicillin, quinine, and aspirin are still used in medicine. Anastasia Agaeva, a general practitioner at the medical company SberZdorovye, told URA.RU about this.

“Hirudotherapy (treatment with medicinal leeches — URA.RU note) was used to stimulate or restrict blood flow — as a cure for numerous ailments, including plague, smallpox, hypertension, epilepsy and gout, as well as to maintain general health. Now leeches can be used in cosmetology and plastic and reconstructive surgery,” the therapist said.

Agaeva also spoke about foxglove. This plant was used as a laxative and diuretic. Now foxglove (digoxin) is used in the treatment of chronic heart failure. Penicillin was used to treat wounds during the largest wars. Currently, a large number of drugs have been created based on this substance, used to treat bacterial infections of soft tissues and lungs.

Quinine used to be effective as an antipyretic and painkiller. Now drugs containing this substance are used for malaria. Aspirin used to be used as a painkiller. At the moment, acetylsalicylic acid is also effective in reducing thrombus formation.

Earlier, Tatyana Simonova, a general practitioner at the medical company SberZdorovye, said that folk remedies do not help with ARVI. So far, only one study has shown that garlic can probably prevent the occurrence of colds, and mustard plasters can cause a chemical burn.
