Already in the process of migrating a good part of the production of iPhones from China to IndiaApple will probably have a percentage of the production of one more of its products transferred from one country to another in the near future.
According to the Archyde.coma Foxconn — the main outsourced manufacturer of Apple products — signed a new contract with Maçã for the construction of a new factory in India, which would have as its main target the production of an unprecedented product category for the company: the AirPods.
A source at the agency informed that the assembler will invest more than US$200 million in the new factory, which will be located in the state of Telangana. Foxconn studied the viability of the business for months due to the lower profit margins it might have with the production of headphones, but chose to go ahead to win points with Apple.
As the request for the production of AirPods in India came from Apple itself, Foxconn’s expectation is that the company places it at the top of priority when placing new production orders, placing it in a superior position in relation to competitors such as Wistron and Pegatron.
Apple, in turn, will be able to further diversify the manufacturing field of its products — which is one of the main current objectives of the company, mainly because China is seen as a ticking time bomb due to the unfriendly relationship of the Asian country with the U.S.
Construction of the future factory should begin in the second half of this year, with production expected to start by the end of next year.
