Foxconn plans new $700 million factory in India

A Foxconnone of the largest partners of Appleplans to invest approx. US$700 million in a new factory in India to increase local production — a movement that has already been noticed since last year —, according to information from the Bloomberg.

According to the report, the factory will be installed in a site of more than 1.2 million square meters, close to Bangalore airport — capital of the state of Karnataka, in southern India.

In addition to parts production, the factory will also be able to assemble Apple devices — and Foxconn also plans to use the facility to manufacture some parts for its electric vehicle business.

The new production site in India is expected to create around 100 mil jobs; to give you an idea, the large complex known as “iPhone City” in Zhengzhou (China) employs around 200,000 people.

Plans might still change as Foxconn is finalizing investment and project details, as highlighted by Bloomberg. Despite this, the venture has the potential to be one of Foxconn’s biggest to date in India and underscores how China is at risk of losing its status as the world’s biggest producer of consumer electronics.

That’s why Apple and other US brands are relying on their Chinese suppliers to diversify the locations of their production lines, which include countries like India and Vietnam.

In the case of India, the country offered financial incentives to Apple suppliers, such as Foxconn — which began manufacturing the latest generation of iPhones in the country. Other smaller partners, such as Wistron and Pegatron, also grew in India, while suppliers such as Jabil began to manufacture components for AirPods locally.
