Fourcade, Boe, Bjoerndalen or Poirée: Quentin Fillon Maillet facing the legends

It’s a fact, Quentin Fillon Maillet has exploded in front of the world this season. And how ! Winner of the big crystal globe, two titles at the Olympics and three Olympic silver medals, the Jura was simply exceptional. Neither Johannes Boe, quickly offside, nor Emilien Jacquelin or Sturla Laegreid, revelation of last season, could steal the show and raise fears for his overall victory. Dominating, “QFM” soared to heights rarely seen. In fact, only four have already done better: Martin Fourcade, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, Johannes Boe and Raphaël Poirée.

Fillon Maillet: “These globes compensate for all the sacrifices”

There was a time when biathlon included the races of the world championships or the Olympic Games in its season. The points scored counted for the general classification. For the sake of consistency, we have therefore done the same for this 2021-2022 season. Also, Quentin Fillon Maillet’s success total is 10 (8 in the World Cup, 2 in the Olympics).

Fillon Maillet, Worley, Noël, Laffont… Les Bleus lit up winter 2021-2022

No need to go back too far to find traces of a better season in terms of victories. In 2018-2019, Johannes Boe set a record by winning 16 races in total (15+1 at the Worlds). Two years earlier, Martin Fourcade had risen to 14 (13+1) and further away from us, in the 2000s, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (in 2004-2005) and Raphaël Poirée (2003-2004) had done little better than QFM with 12 and 11 successes respectively. In this ranking, the Frenchman comes in 5th place, since the next is Emil Svendsen, author of 8 successes in 2010-2011.

Single season winning record

athletes Number of wins
Johannes Boe (2018-2019) 19
Martin Fourcade (2016-2017) 14
Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (2004-2005) 12
Raphael Poirée (2003-2004) 11
Quentin Fillon Maillet (2021-2022) 10
Emil Svendsen (2010-2011) 8

The podiums: Ahead of Bjoerndalen and Poirée

What amazed the followers this season was, among other things, the regularity of the leader of the France team. Not only has he won ten times counting the Beijing Olympics, but he has a total of 16 podiums in 26 races. An exceptional ratio. To be convinced of this, you have to see that “QFM” is only outstripped by the two recent monsters of the discipline: Martin Fourcade and Johannes Boe. The first had slammed 22 podiums (out of 26) in 2017-2018, a record in this area. The Norwegian had ridden 19 “boxes” in 25 races during the 2019-2020 season. But behind this duo, it is Fillon Maillet who settles.

Ole Einar Bjoerndalen and Raphaël Poirée, rivals in their time, never did better than 15. Yet the two, especially the Norwegian for that matter, dominated the circuit on skis, an advantage which generally provides sufficient mattress for ” ensure” podiums as often as possible. An advantage that Fillon Maillet used very well throughout the winter.

The small globes: A 3rd will not have hurt QFM

To fully understand an athlete’s dominance over a World Cup season, looking at the number of small globes he has won is often a good indicator. Not always, that said, since if Quentin Fillon Maillet walked in the biathlon, he only offered himself those of the sprint and the pursuit. It was thus Tarjei Boe who won that of the Individual while “QFM” let slip that of the mass-start in the hands of the surprising Sivert Bakken this Sunday.

Before him, many of them had made a great raid. Thus, the inseparable Martin Fourcade and Johannes Boe were both able to grab everything, like Raphaël Poirée. Bjoerndalen had to be “satisfied” at best with three small globes out of four. With two, Fillon Maillet is in the company of Tarjei Boe, Emil Svendsen, Sven Fischer and Vladimir Dratchev.

Career victories: Fillon Maillet leads the pack

This statistic does not concern the season but it says a lot about the place that Quentin Fillon Maillet occupies in the history of biathlon. The top of the historical ranking of men’s victories (World Cup + major championships) can be broken down into several blocks. First a duo formed by Bjoerndalen (95) and Fourcade (83) then another containing Boe (55), Poirée (44), Svendsen (38) and Fischer (33). Behind, the rest of the pack.

Do you know who leads this pack? Quentin Fillon Maillet, tied with Frank Ullrich, with 16 successes of course. When he had won only six times between 2018 and 2021, and was pointing beyond the historic Top 30, the Frenchman made a monumental leap to stall in 7th position. If the top of the basket will be difficult to get, it would take more than doubling its total to do so. “QFM” knows that a very warm place awaits him the day he decides to retire.
