The introduction of a corona vaccination has failed for the time being. Neither the draft law by traffic light deputies for compulsory vaccination from 60 nor the draft of the Union received a majority. The templates once morest compulsory vaccination also failed.

In Germany there will be no general corona vaccination for the time being. The corresponding draft law for all people over the age of 60 was rejected by a majority in the Bundestag. 378 MPs voted once morest the draft, 296 MPs voted in favor and nine abstained.

At this point in time, there will be no obligation for other population groups in Germany beyond the mandatory corona vaccination for staff in health and care facilities that has been in force since March.

Union, FDP and AfD drafts also fail

In another vote, the motion of the CDU and CSU in the Bundestag was also rejected. A majority of 497 MPs voted once morest the so-called Vaccination Prevention Act, 172 voted in favor. The Union’s proposal envisaged not making a decision now, but depending on the infection situation in the fall regarding compulsory vaccination.

The motion by a group of deputies led by FDP Vice Wolfgang Kubicki once morest compulsory vaccination also failed to find a majority. 85 MPs voted for it, 590 rejected it and twelve abstained.

FDP leadership justifies their rejection

The FDP leadership issued a written statement saying no to a general obligation to vaccinate. It said that with the current virus variants, compulsory vaccination would only be justified if there was a risk of the health system being overloaded and this might be prevented by compulsory vaccination. But you see “no indications at the moment”. The FDP politicians also rejected the argument that the introduction of compulsory vaccination today might guarantee that no further corona protection measures would be required in the autumn. “We are convinced that nobody can make this promise today.”

The AfD’s application also failed. 607 of 686 MPs voted once morest, 79 voted yes. The AfD had not only spoken out once morest compulsory corona vaccination, but also applied for the abolition of the compulsory vaccination for healthcare workers, which has been in force since mid-March.

Heated debate in the Bundestag

Previously, the Bundestag had heatedly discussed the possible extension of the corona vaccination requirement and also argued regarding the voting procedure. The advocates of compulsory vaccination from the SPD, Greens and FDP wanted to prevent the application for compulsory vaccination from the age of 60 being voted on first because they hoped to get more votes in the reverse order. A majority of parliamentarians had rejected this.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz had also spoken out in favor of general vaccination as a precaution for the fall. However, due to obvious differences of opinion, the traffic light coalition had not submitted a government draft. Voting was therefore largely carried out without the usual parliamentary group specifications.

76 percent of Germans vaccinated twice

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a general obligation to vaccinate had long been ruled out across party lines. In view of the slow pace of vaccinations, Scholz and the prime ministers spoke out in favor of it at the end of last year. At least 63.2 million people or 76 percent of all residents currently have basic protection with the necessary second syringe. The vaccination campaign has almost come to a standstill.
