– There is a long way to go to reduce the climate footprint of Norwegian online shopping, especially when it comes to packaging, packaging and deliveries. A lot of air and plastic is transported, and only a fifth of consumers get the opportunity to choose environmentally friendly alternatives, such as fossil-free transport, says Ardalan Fadai, e-commerce manager at Nets, in a press release.
The report “Norwegian E-commerce 2023” from Nets, which offers payment cards and electronic payment solutions, is based on a survey of 3,600 Norwegian participants conducted by Sifo/Kantar.
Here it appears that four out of ten Norwegians are concerned that the online stores they shop at care regarding the environmental impact of their business.
Young people and women are more environmentally conscious
It is the younger age groups and especially women who care the most, according to the report. Half of the women who answered the survey said that they cared regarding this, and a third of these answered that they choose an environmentally friendly shipping option if they can.
The survey also shows that the elderly are also concerned regarding the climate and environmental footprint when they shop online, but are less able than the younger ones to actually choose these solutions.
– The younger ones, on the other hand, act more as they see fit, with four out of ten choosing environmentally friendly solutions when given the opportunity, Nets states.
Sweden is ahead
According to the report, Norwegian consumers are less environmentally conscious than their Swedish neighbours, where more than half care regarding how environmentally friendly the online stores they shop at are. Fadai believes this may have something to do with the solutions offered.
– The online stores in Norway lag behind their Swedish neighbours, where a large part of the largest online stores offer environmentally friendly distribution and some only such distribution. However, we expect that environmentally friendly delivery options in Norway will increase. It can become an important competitive parameter for the online store, says Fadai.
