Four minors died in the central and Pacific areas of Nicaragua when they tried to cross swollen rivers due to heavy rains in recent days, authorities reported this Saturday.
The Nicaraguan authorities confirmed the death of two minors, one 16 years old and the other 9 years old, who were swept away on Friday afternoon by the current of the Kamusasca River, Villa Sandino municipality, department of Chontales, central Nicaragua, when they were trying to return to their homes.
The sudden flooding of the river surprised the two minors, who, confident after seeing their mothers crossing the tributary without problem, decided to follow them, according to the official report.
The bodies of the teenager and the girl were recovered this Saturday by local residents and the fire department.
The third victim is a 10-year-old boy who was swept away on Friday afternoon by the El Bosque River, also in the municipality of Villa Sandino, when, in the company of his parents, they were heading home.
The current snatched the minor from his parents’ hands, whose body was found five hours later.
The fourth victim is an 8-year-old minor who was dragged by an overflowing riverbed in the municipality of Belén, department of Rivas, southern Pacific of Nicaragua, while playing in the rain, according to the preliminary report.
The authorities have asked the population not to cross swollen rivers or flooded areas, and to wait for their levels to drop.
