Four Hills Tournament: Kamil Stoch drops out prematurely after qualifying debacle in Innsbruck

Kamil Stoch will return home on Tuesday. “Until a week from now, it will be important for Kamil Stoch to regenerate and then complete motor skills training,” the message said: “He will return to the hill after he has recovered mentally and physically.”

Immediately after qualifying, Poland’s sports director Adam Malysz had indicated that Stoch would leave the club prematurely. “This was probably the crucial moment,” said Malysz at Eurosport Poland.

Kamil Stoch had already jumped far behind his top form in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In both competitions, the three-time Olympic champion missed the finals in 41st and 47th.

On the second day of rest, corrections were then made to Stoch’s jump, but these obviously did not work. “On Sunday discussions with the coaches were optimistic. They said that they changed Kamil’s position so much that it should work. It didn’t work,” Malysz said in the afternoon.

Stuck completely at a loss: “Can’t analyze it”

Stoch himself confirmed the assessment: “Nothing worked from the first jump, even if we made small corrections with the coach.”

From the beginning, Stoch’s jumps on Monday were strange, said Malysz. “He had bad conditions in training. Conditions were good in qualifying, but the jump was bad,” said the 44-year-old.

It was seen that he would not fly away, explained the Polish ski jumping legend further and analyzed: “Kamil flew ‘behind the skis’, there was no speed to fly away.”

When asked about the cause of the problems, everyone seems at a loss at the moment. “If the coaches knew that, we would have had a recipe a long time ago. There is still something wrong with Kamil,” said Malysz and Stoch said in the interview: “I can’t analyze it, I have to find the problem.”

However, it is extremely difficult to conduct precise research into the causes during the World Cup and to improve the jump. “There are also emotions, there is no time,” explained Malysz.

Despite mistakes: Eisenbichler and Geiger jump into the top ten

After the tour, the World Cup continues

Especially not during the Four Hills Tournament with four qualifications and four competitions within ten days.

In addition, this year, after the tour finale on Thursday in Bischofshofen, there will be a normal individual World Cup on Saturday at the same place. A team competition will follow on Sunday.

Malysz: “Stoch needs quiet training”

But from Malysz’s point of view, time is exactly what would help Stoch to regain his form with a view to the Olympic Games in Beijing (February 4th to 20th). “At this point, Kamil needs quiet training and dozens of good jumps to stabilize,” explained Malysz.

Stoch’s exit is the temporary low point of a Four Hills Tournament that has been completely screwed up from a Polish point of view. Because Stoch’s teammates have not been able to convince either. Already after Oberstdorf, when Dawid Kubacki (28th) was just one Pole making it into the second round, there had been discussions about the departure of the entire Polish team to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

This idea was rejected again, also because it was through eleventh place for Piotr Zyla and Jakub Wolny (23rd) on New Years Day gave little bright spots.
On Monday, all Poles made it to Innsbruck with the exception of Stoch. The best of the team of national coach Michael Dolezal was in the victory of the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi Andrzej Stekala as 18.
