At least four people were shot dead on a train in the US city of Chicago on Monday and a suspect was arrested, local police said.

The Chicago Police Department (state of Illinois) detailed that it responded to a 911 emergency call on Monday morning and upon arriving at the Forest Park train station found the four victims.

“Three were pronounced dead at the scene, the fourth was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood where he was later pronounced dead,” a police statement said.

Chicago police released a description of the suspected offender based on surveillance footage, and a suspect was later arrested with a confiscated firearm, the statement said.

“This appears to be an isolated incident with no immediate threat to the community,” the statement said.

Chicago operates one of the largest public transportation networks in the United States, with more than 317,000 people using its rail system on an average weekday, according to the Chicago Transit Authority.

Gun violence is common in the United States, a country where there are more firearms than people. Attempts to restrict rights regarding the purchase, ownership and use of weapons always meet with strong political resistance, mainly in conservative circles.

This year, there have been at least 378 mass shootings (involving at least four victims) across the United States, according to the independent NGO Gun Violence Archive.

In June, the US federal surgeon general released a landmark report calling gun violence a “public health crisis” and calling for sweeping controls on gun ownership and purchase.
