Original title: Four art songs around the theme of “home” were made into micro-movies

The four short films were directed by Luo Xiaohui. She took four surreal photography works by American visual artist Man Ray as the visual theme and shot them in a “Chinese Baroque” shophouse in Little India. Luo Xiaohui said: “Some of these four songs express the nostalgia for the deceased relatives, some express the timidity of being close to the hometown, and some express the inner cry of wanting to get rid of the shackles of family.”

The four micro-movies will be released from July 1, and one will be released every Friday night. The audience can watch it for free on the YouTube platform. Bao Junkai also recorded interviews with the main creative team to share the ideas and perspectives behind the production. Watch link: .

Luo Xiaohui said: “It is an innovative attempt to make art songs into micro-films. I hope that the general public can access art songs from a new perspective and eliminate stereotypes.”

Handel’s “Pena Tiranna” (Undiminished Sorrow), Brahms’ “O wüsst’ ich doch den Weg zurück” (May I Know My Way Back), Huang Zi’s “Homesickness” and Kurt Weir (Kurt Weill)’s “Lonely House” (Lonely House), the four songs, spanning the Baroque period, the Romantic period, the early years of the Republic of China and following World War II, the lyrics are in Italian, German, Chinese and English respectively. Tenor Pan Yijia, soprano Rebecca Reavley (Xiuhui), tenor Zheng Huiliang and soprano Luo Xiaohui sang. Bao Junkai hopes to experience different emotions around the concept of “home” with a rich and diverse cultural background.

The song is accompanied by Chen Weijie and Li Jinyue as piano accompaniment. Chen Weijie said: “The four songs have different styles. For example, Huang Zi’s “Homesickness” is a Chinese art song familiar to the public. The images in the lyrics are subtle and restrained, such as the willow silk green and the cuckoo cuckoo, which are very similar to the early years of the Republic of China.”

In the era of epidemic, “home” is both worrying and depressing. With the theme of “Homesongs”, local music scholar Bao Junkai serves as the producer, shooting four art songs into micro-movies and integrating them into the context of life.
