Four arrested for damage to the ecosystem of the Páramo Merida

Four men were arrested on Sunday for causing environmental damage to Pico El Águila del Páramo de la Culata, in the state of Mérida, by participating in some mud pits.

Tarek William Saab, Attorney General of the Republic, in a second report published in Twitter in the followingnoon, he pointed out that the detainees were identified as Santiago Villarreal, Andrade Ramírez and Zein Narch Soltan.

Earlier, the official had announced the arrest of Edgar Rangel Maldonadoowner of one of the vehicles involved in the event.

Saab pointed out that the four prisoners will be charged by the Public Ministry. He also indicated that those involved in the event were under the influence of alcohol.

In the social network, the official published photographs of the detainees and the vehicles at the scene of the events. Also of how the place was following they affected the ecosystem.

“The Public Ministry will sanction in an exemplary manner the individuals who damaged the Sierra La Culata National Park, who drunkenly affected the ecosystem,” Saab wrote on the social network.

He also indicated that the detainees will be charged with the crimes of illegal occupation in Protected Natural Areas and Contravention of Land Management Plans.

The governor of the entity, Jehyson Guzmán, also rejected what happened.

«We repudiate these facts, no one can be in solidarity with those who have caused severe and irreparable damage to the mirror of water that existed in this natural place; snowfall should not be a reason to encourage the ecocide of our natural park ».

For his part, Toro Belisario, director of the Ministry of Ecosocialism and Water in Mérida, pointed out that so far there are seven people who are being investigated for allegedly being involved in what happened.

He added that he also received complaints that another environmental crime occurred in the Chorotal sector, in the Andrés Bello municipality.
