MIAMI.- The City of Hialeah honored Dr. Jorge Acevedo, founder of the Colonia Medical Center, naming an avenue following him at the initiative of Councilor Jesús Tundidor.

In the event that took place this Monday, May 22, Esteban Bovo, mayor of Hialeah, Jenisbel Acevedo, eldest daughter of the doctor, and Dr. Acevedo himself, spoke.

“It’s always nice to see the American dream come alive in Hialeah,” said Mayor Bovo.

“The American dream is not free, you have to work for it. But it is very important that they know that a city like ours has its doors open for people who arrive in fear, without understanding the language, or the system, to be able to fulfill their dreams. This is confirmation that in the city of Hialeah, as in the US, whoever comes to work, who comes with a dignified vision, can achieve many things.”

In his address, the mayor made reference to the fact that Hialeah is regarding to turn 100 years old and “we want to make sure that the next generation understands the legacy of these people who honor our streets.”

Dr. Acevedo opened his first health center in 2007 with the “Your Health First” project for the elderly, recalled his visibly moved daughter Jenisbel, who said she was proud of her father and thanked him for the sacrifice throughout his life so that “Mommy and I didn’t lack anything”, while continuing his studies and graduating as a doctor in his native Cuba.

The clinic located at 4 West was the first of the eleven that the Colonia now has spread between Miami-Dade and Broward counties, both in South Florida.

For his part, Dr. Acevedo said he was very happy, “but, above all, very honored that so many recognize the work of a person.” He thanked the city, those who have helped him, his work team and his patients.

Acevedo said that he recognizes Hialeah as his city, because “it was the one that gave him the opportunity to establish the first business.”

“Jorge Acevedo came to this country with a briefcase full of dreams, but to materialize them it was necessary to have many things in favor, the city of Hialeah was always in my favor, it always helped me create what I now have,” recalled the loaded doctor of pride and excitement.

At the end, he promised to work hard so as not to disappoint the people who have honored him today.

Jorge Acevedo Avenue is located in the section of 1st East, which runs from 3rd Street to 4th Street in Hialeah.
