In a video from November 5, Fouad Ahidar notably compared the actions of Israel and the genocide of the Jews during the Second World War. He had strongly put into perspective the explosion of violence caused on October 7 by “part of Hamas” against the Israeli civilian population. The wide media coverage of these remarks sparked a wave of indignation on Thursday on the Dutch-speaking political scene in the capital, in particular because of the position held by Mr. Ahidar.
The person concerned had already made a detailed apology on Thursday. He reiterated them on Friday.

Seeming to retain the confidence of his parliamentary colleagues from the majority, he however no longer benefits from that of part of the opposition (N-VA, Vlaams Belang) who threatened to leave the plenary session as soon as the mini-debate on his subject finished, if it remained in place.
Without having gone so far as to demand the resignation of Fouad Ahidar herself, whose quality of work as president of the assembly she recognized, MP Bianca Debaets (CD&V) however also indicated that she would do the same during this session. to signify that it was not enough, in the circumstances, to return, from Friday, to a classic agenda.
After an interruption of the session, Fouad Ahidar spontaneously gave up chairing the day’s session, being replaced by the Groen MP, Soetkin Hoessen.
