FC Barcelona, Spain, announced today, Thursday, the death of its legend, former midfielder Josep Maria Fausti, at the age of 82.
Fosti played 406 matches with Barcelona during the 12 years he spent at the club between 1960 and 1972, and he scored 117 goals for the team.
Fosti rose from the club’s academy and played on loan for the Osasuna team, coinciding with the performance of military service in Pamplona in the early sixties, before establishing himself as a key element in the Barcelona team.
Fosti was famous for his speed, technical abilities and decisive shots. He was one of the prominent symbols of Barcelona and helped the team to win the King’s Cup three times and the European Fairs Cup once.
FC Barcelona stated through its official account on the social networking site “Twitter”: “Barcelona fans everywhere will always remember you. rest in peace.”
Foste was part of the Spanish national team that won the 1964 European Championship.
Barcelona did not refer to this achievement when announcing the news of his death, but Real Madrid referred to it when offering condolences for Fosti’s death.
A Real Madrid spokesperson said: “Real Madrid, its president and board of directors are saddened by the death of Josep Maria Foste, the legend of Barcelona and Spanish football, who was part of the Spanish team that won the 1964 European Championship.”
