The discussions around Forza Motorsport have been lively for two days. Whether on the site or Discord, many of you found the latest presentation of the game rather disappointing. But another element has also been talked regarding recently: the lack of communication around the Ray Tracing applied to the Global Illumination.

Ray Tracing, a subject avoided in the latest Forza Motorsport presentation

The gameplay of Forza Motorsport was expected and it was during Forza Monthly this week that the developers detailed the career mode of the game with several sequences in the pits or on the track. Unfortunately, the sauce doesn’t seem to have really set.

Some point to a lack of new car physics (Wreckfest is often cited in comparison), others point to an unconvincing graphical aspect, while the gameplay captures presented were made on PC.

However, one question remains unanswered: where is the Ray Tracing applied to the Global Illumination ? While this was one of the first technical arguments made by Turn10 when announcing the game, the subject was not mentioned at all during the last presentation. The word Ray Tracing didn’t even come up at all. We then sought to understand.

Vocabulary changes at Turn10 and an article removed

To get to the bottom of it, we looked for old articles where Turn10 talked regarding the subject and it was no later than January, in a big streak during Xbox’s Developer_Direct. Turn10 took the opportunity to publish an article on its site, but when you click on the link from a search engine, l’article is no longer available.

But nothing really gets lost on the web, and we were able to find the content of the article through caching tools. Here is word for word what it contained on the Ray Tracing:

Q: Does Forza Motorsport on Xbox Series X|S have ray tracing?

A: Forza Motorsport offers real-time ray tracing on the track.

Q: How does ray tracing work in Forza Motorsport?

A: Ray tracing bounces rays around the scene and performs thousands of calculations to achieve true reflections. Real-time calculations of this magnitude were not possible on previous generations.

Q: How does ray tracing global illumination improve the graphics in Forza Motorsport?

A: When we apply ray tracing to global illumination, we simulate how light picks up colors as it bounces from one surface to another. So a barrier next to a red rumble strip will be influenced by that color, creating a scene where all the pieces are connected.

Q: What does ray tracing mean for Forza Motorsport players?

A: Forza Motorsport players can expect the most beautiful, photorealistic visuals they’ve ever seen in a game, optimized to harness the full power of Xbox Series X|S consoles and PC hardware.

The article has since been deleted, and when looking that of june released following the game’s last presentation, the notion of Ray Tracing has been watered down.

The RTGI, set for Ray Traced Global Illuminationis never mentioned once more, suggesting that Turn10 no longer uses this technique in-game. Details on this will be shared by the time the game launches in October.

It’s hard to know exactly what’s behind ‘real-time ray tracing on the track’, but it might just be ray tracing applied to the reflections of the cars during the race, and ultimately not ray tacing applied to the lighting global, which would give a better rendering of the light on the surfaces.

While waiting for clarification from Turn10 on this subject, you can still find the latest gameplay footage of the game in the video below. The release of Forza Motorsport remains scheduled for October 10 exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PC as well as in Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
