Fortnite creator begins payments on $2.75M settlement

The settlement website says payments by Epic Games began Thursday, and legal documents emphasize that the settlement “is a compromise of the disputed claims and is not an admission of liability, wrongdoing, or wrongdoing.” in the case.

The class action was certified by the Supreme Court of British Columbia and the settlement also resolves claims in a separate and similar lawsuit in Quebec.

The suit originally alleged that Epic’s placement of loot boxes in video games like Fortnite and Rocket League – where players pay with real money to acquire a digital opportunity to roll dice to win an item in the game – constituted a game of chance without a license.

In a statement, Epic says it removed these “random bundles” from these games in 2019, and players “should know upfront what they are acquiring when they make in-game purchases.”

In addition to the compensation announcement, the company said the same day that it would lay off approximately 16% of its workforce in the context of a “major structural change” in the Fortnite business model environment.
